FOCUS IN SOUTHAMPTON

Focus is working with Southampton City Council to develop and deliver two prestigious projects in Southampton.

Tudor House Museum and Garden - Restoration and Development
Built at the end of the 15th century, Tudor House is one of Southampton’s largest, oldest and most-visited museums.

Phase I of the project was the £1.9 million restoration of the Museum which was funded by Southampton City Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage. The works incorporated traditional techniques together with current technology. Efforts were made to replicate the materials used in medieval times.

Focus was appointed as Project Manager for Phase II of the development project and assisted Southampton City Council with the successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Phase II Project will include new visitor facilities, a café and a shop. King John’s Palace will also be included in the scheme, together with an educational resource centre and function suite at Tudor Merchants Hall.

The new work will enable Tudor House Museum to become a welcoming and enjoyable visitor attraction with new facilities, displays and experiences which will tell the story of the house and the people who lived and worked there.

It s anticipated that Tudor House Museum will reopen to the public in the Summer of 2011.

Sea City Museum (former Magistrates Court)
The former Magistrates Courts became vacant in 2000/2001 when new purpose built courts were opened in Southampton and in 2006 the Police announced their plan to move from the Civic Centre to new premises in 2010. Southampton City Council commissioned a feasibility study to explore the scheme which would utilise the vacant buildings to create facilities which would celebrate Southampton’s rich heritage. The £28 million scheme to develop “Sea City Museum” has been divided into two phases. Phase I aims to create an exhibition to tell the Story of Southampton’s wider Maritime History and to also commemorate the centenary of the loss of the Titanic in 1912.   Phase II aims to focus on other aspects of Southampton’s history and heritage.

Focus assisted Southampton City Council with a successful Stage I application to the Heritage Lottery Fund and is project manager of the development stage which will result in a project ready to be submitted for planning.  We were also commissioned to provide Project Management support to recruit the Project/Design Team.
